Petition from Saulat Mirza’s Wife Accepted by SHC

A petition that was filed by the wife of Saulat Mirza, the death-row inmate was accepted by the Sindh High Court (SHC). She asked the court to re-open the murder case of Shahid Hamid, the then MD of KESC in light of the revelations that had been made by her husband in today’s video statement.

According to Nighat Mirza, the convict had made some further revelations to the JIT, which was founded after his video statement. It is maintained by the petitioner that her husband is an important witness and other criminals would benefit because of his execution. The petition states that if the execution of Saulat Mirza is carried out, all the evidence would just be buried with him. Therefore, the petition stated that the prisoner’s execution should be delayed until a complete investigation has been conducted.

Saulat Mirza had been convicted of murdering the managing director of KESC, Shahid Hamid along with his guard and driver outside his residence in the Defence area of Karachi in July, 1997. Earlier this month, a new death warrant had been issued by an Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Karachi for the execution of Saulat Mirza on May 12th at the Machh Jail.

A stay had been granted in the execution of the death-row inmate after some startling revelations had been made by him in a video statement regarding the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM). It was claimed by Mirza that he was a worker of the party and he had received orders from Babar Ghauri, the party leader, for murdering Shahid Hamid. He even added that the orders were actually given by the party chief Altaf Hussain to Babar Ghauri, who then passed them on to the workers.
