Pakistan Major Political Developments In 2021

Pakistan has experienced various changes in its political sphere during the year which has both positive and negative impacts on the Country. We will be discussing the major events that played their roles in the development of national politics.

Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi Arrest:

Earlier this year, Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi who is one of the senior leaders at Laskar- e- Taiba was sentenced to 5 years in prison for helping terrorists financially. 

The pressure was initially mounted on the state by the United States and India for the arrest of Lakhvi after his involvement in the 2008 Mumbai terror attack. As per reports, almost 160 people were killed during that attack.

The court found him guilty for arranging and distributing funds for terrorist attacks by Lashkar-e- Taiba.

According to the Counter-terrorism team, he got arrested at a medical dispensary where he usually collects the funds to support terrorists.

TLP Protest:

Takhreek-e -Labbaik Pakistan warned the government that they will go on the streets to strike if the French ambassador would not be expelled. On that warning, the Government signed an agreement to take the issue to the parliament.

The TLP asked the government in April for the implementation of their agreement, as they wanted to take a step in downgrading the ties with France. Protests started in various cities after the arrest of Saad Rizvi (Leader of TLP).

When both parties failed to negotiate, the federal government banned the TLP and took saad Rizvi in their custody. The TLP came down to the streets in October this year and the government had to use rangers to maintain law.

The TLP wreck havoc in the streets of Punjab that saw a lot of causalities. 7 police officers were killed and dozens wounded during their violent protest. The 10-day wild protest came to an end when the government high-level team reached an agreement.

PML-N Victory In NA 133 By-Election:

The election was contested for the seat of NA 133 after the demise of PMLN MNA Pervaiz Malik. The election was contested between PMLN candidate Shahista Pervaiz malik and The PPP candidate Aslam Gill. The PTI candidate failed to participate as he was knocked on the technical ground.

PMLN Shahista Pervaiz emerged victorious after securing an unaccessible lead of 46,811 votes while his competitor PPP’s Aslam gill manage to secure only 32,313 votes.

As per the reports, only 18.59% of voters turn up on Election Day to cast their vote. 80,022 people voted out of a total of 440,845.

Opposition Party Wins Initial Phase Of LG Elections In PTI-Led KP:

Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) faced an unimaginable defeat in their most strong region KP in the first leg of local government elections. The defeat came against the rising party of Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam. Nobody saw that before the elections as PTI had a stronghold in the KP region for so many years.

The poor show has urged PTI leader Imran khan to make significant changes in the party to expect a much better performance in the upcoming remaining elections.
